Rather than a long list of disconnected priorities, a district might set two Wildly Important Goals that every person in the district played a role in supporting. An example seen in one district we work with was: “Increase the percentage of students reading at grade level by 10%.” Everyone from students to district leaders played a role in achieving this goal which brought the team together.

Traditional goal-setting focuses on lag measures—outcomes like test scores that only emerge after the fact. 4DX shifts attention to lead measures, the daily actions that predict and drive those outcomes.⁹

Lead measures are proactive indicators that predict success. Unlike lag measures, which reflect past performance, lead measures allow educators to monitor actions that influence outcomes in real-time. Research in education supports the power of lead measures to drive student success. For example, tracking key behaviors like student attendance or formative assessment data can signal areas needing attention before they escalate.^11,12,13

To improve attendance, a school might focus on lead measures such as “daily parent calls for absences” and “weekly attendance celebrations.” These proactive steps generate real-time momentum and provide early indicators of whether the strategy is working.
