Dr. James “Marty” Schafer builds leadership capacity and teams at the School Board, Superintendent, and district level, addressing the need to develop collaborative problem solvers amidst the ongoing landscape of financial uncertainties, a global pandemic, difficult social and political environments, and the cultural shift in education.
Dr. Schafer’s key focus is on both organic and systemic leadership development. He builds on a background of educational experiences, non-profit organizations, management, military/government relationships, and consulting. Having served on the school board for 18 years, he led as board president for the seven in which the district was named Washington State’s School Board of the Year for large school boards and a Board of Distinction for six years. Marty continues developing leadership in his community and building partnerships for his diverse urban school district and community.
Marty is a lifelong supporter of public education through developing people, teams, curriculum, and structures that increase the effectiveness of leadership – “Connectedness Equates to Effectiveness.” He is married to a high school/consulting teacher and has three amazing daughters (all of whom work in education).
