Summary
Curriculum silos are negatively impacting educational outcomes for students. The educational experience would be more engaging and meaningful if it were more like real life and work experiences.
Key Point 1
Siloed curriculum does not allow students to understand the interrelatedness and complexity of information through real-world application. Shifting to integrated content learning through meaningful and engaging learning experiences will lead to improved student attendance, behavior, and academic outcomes.
Key Point 2
Integrating academic standards through the development of life and leadership skills in students is best for students. When future-readiness skills are the focus, all students can feel successful and be prepared to thrive in the workforce. Teachers shift to serving as coaches and mentors to equip every student to be successful beyond graduation.
Action Step
Educational leaders can innovate by anchoring the educational experience in foundational future-readiness skills, such as communication, problem-solving and teamwork. Teachers can act as coaches, helping students develop these skills, while allowing students to develop agency by leading their own learning through integrated content area learning.
